Ben & Elysia’s couple shoot at Tredegar House was honestly such a dream. The light was soft, the setting was beautiful, and the two of them just brought such a natural, easy chemistry to the session. It was one of those shoots where everything came together - and it really shows in the photos!
One thing that made a big difference was what they wore. A lot of people don’t realise how much your outfit can influence the overall look and feel of your photos - especially if you’re after that light, airy, romantic vibe. You actually have so much say in how your photos turn out, just by what you choose to wear!
I know it can feel a bit stressful figuring out what to wear, but I promise it doesn’t have to be. Once you know what photographs well, it all starts to click into place. So let’s clear up a few common myths I’ve heard a lot when it comes to outfit choices:
Myth 1: “Neutrals will wash me out.”
This one’s super common, but honestly, neutrals photograph so well. Think whites, creams, beiges, soft pinks and greys - these colours bounce light and create such a soft, glowing look. Unless a certain shade really clashes with your skin tone, neutrals are usually the safest (and prettiest!) choice for photos.
Myth 2: “You need to wear black to look slimmer.”
Yes, black can be slimming, but it also tends to look quite harsh in photos. If you’re hoping for light and airy images, black might not give you the effect you’re after. Go for something lighter and more flattering - you can still look and feel amazing without going straight to black!
Myth 3: “We have to match.”
Nope! Please don’t feel like you both need to show up wearing the same colour. Instead, aim to coordinate. Choose tones that go well together without being identical - for example, one of you in soft beige and the other in muted blush or light grey. It’ll look way more natural in photos.
Myth 4: “The location matters more than what we wear.”
The truth is, your outfits do way more to set the tone than the location. Tredegar House is stunning, but if Ben & Elysia had worn bold, dark colours, the whole vibe would’ve felt completely different. Lighter clothing really helps enhance that soft and romantic feel.
Myth 5: “I need to buy something new.”
Not at all! If you already have something that fits well, suits the style of the shoot and makes you feel confident, that’s perfect. There’s no pressure to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe - it’s all about choosing outfits that feel like you.
Romantic Style Recipe
More specifically, if you’re dreaming of a shoot that feels soft, romantic, and full of light, the outfits you choose can honestly make a huge difference. The right clothing can completely elevate your photos and help them turn out brighter, softer, and more flattering — basically, that light and airy look we all love!
Here are a few little ingredients that help create that romantic style. You definitely don’t need to tick every single one of these boxes, but the more of them you include, the more dreamy and glowy your final photos will be:
Lighter Trousers Over Dark Jeans
If your partner’s go-to is usually dark jeans or black trousers, try switching them out for something lighter — like khakis, beige chinos, or light grey trousers. Lighter bottoms reflect more light and will help keep your images looking clean, fresh, and bright.
Floaty Dresses and Skirts
Dresses or skirts that have movement (think soft fabrics, subtle ruffles, or layers that catch the breeze) always look amazing in photos. That gentle flow adds a dreamy, romantic feel and creates natural movement, which looks beautiful on camera.
Go for Soft, Neutral Tones
Colours like blush pinks, beiges, soft greys, creams, pale blues and minty greens work so well for light and airy photography. They keep the overall look soft and timeless, and photograph much more gently than bold or heavy colours.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you both feel comfortable and like yourselves. But if you’re aiming for that softer, more romantic style, a few small outfit choices can really help bring that look together.
